Use this dialog box to Define Cost Codes. Cost code definitions enable Contract Management to interpret cost codes so you can sort and display cost information in custom reports. For example, if the cost code 06 100 D represents direct costs (D) related to rough carpentry (CSI division 06 100), you need to define this meaning.
To define cost codes, you must be the only user logged into Contract Management. All other users must be logged out. See the Current Users in Contract Management Dialog Box.
Caution: Do not exit this dialog box by clicking the (X) in the upper right corner of the dialog box. This will prevent anyone from using Contract Management until the service is restarted by an administrator. Click either Save and Close when finished adding the cost code or Cancel.
Definition Name
Enter the name of the cost code definition. Valid names must start with a letter and contain only letters, numbers, or the underscore character ( _ ), without any spaces.
Description
A brief description of the item or service.
Start
The start character equals the start character of the previous section of the cost code plus its length.
For example, the start value for the first column is 1. If the first section of the cost code is five characters long (length), the start value for the next section of the cost code is 1 + 5 = 6. If the second section of the cost code is three characters long, the start value of the third section is 6 + 3 = 9.
Length
The length specifies the maximum number of characters that may be used to define cost code values.
